Social Justice 6: Understanding History: Colonialism
Understanding our History
Before all major sporting events, school and community events, O Canada is played as a matter of tradition and as an expression of national pride. However, it is important to recognize that ... not everyone has the same relationship to this tradition or the country of Canada. Why? Because Canada has a history of harm.
Who is missing from our history and whose story is being told? The erasure of Indigenous cultures from Canadian history is just one example of the many ways colonization has shaped this country. Today, lack of Indigenous representation in sports, business and government and unequal access to resources like clean water, health care and education - among many others - demonstrate how this process is still ongoing. As Canadians, we have a collective responsibility to listen, to learn, and to play an active role in the process of reconciliation. We have a responsibility to take action against injustice.

REFLECTION
What about for those who are not Canadians? What about those who identify themselves with stronger relations to their ethnic background? Why is it relevant for them?
Reflect as to why you would care about the disadvantages Indigenous peoples exerienced to this day.
