Social Justice 11: Scenarios : Identify Isms and Phobia
Understanding Identity
For each of the scenarios provided, choose the ism that best describes what the individual experienced.
At Lakeside Middle School, the soccer team is preparing for an important match. Among the players is Amina, a skilled and dedicated athlete who always wears her hijab as part of her religious practice. Before the game begins, the referee approaches Amina and tells her, "You need to remove your hijab if you want to play. It’s against the rules for players to wear head coverings during the match." Amina is shocked and upset. The hijab is an essential part of her identity and faith, and removing it would go against her beliefs. Despite her commitment to the team and her love for the game, she’s being forced to choose between playing and her religious practice.
At SkyHigh Middle School, the basketball team is known for its camaraderie and spirit, with pre-game pep talks in the locker room being a cherished tradition. Jamie, a talented player who identifies as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, has always looked forward to these moments of team bonding.
However, before a big game, Jamie is pulled aside by a few teammates who say, "We don’t feel comfortable having you in the locker room with us. Maybe it’s better if you sit this one out."
Jamie is hurt and feels excluded. Despite being a valuable member of the team, Jamie is being pushed aside simply because of their sexual orientation. The exclusion from the locker room and the team’s reluctance to fully accept Jamie creates a hostile and unwelcoming environment.
