Understanding Identity

Scenarios

For each of the scenarios provided, choose the ism that best describes what the individual experienced.

The team is planning an overnight trip to the U.S. to play in a tournament. One of the players on your team makes a joke about not wanting to travel with one of the players who is a recent immigrant from Syria, because the US border agents may hold discriminatory views about people from the Middle East.

Students who are wishing to play basketball for the school team are asked to pay a fee to be part of the team. Several students can’t afford to pay and are told to consider raising funds and trying out next year instead.

The football team has started and they are in need of a few additional players. A female student goes out to the next tryout. She is turned away and told she can consider playing on the girls’ flag football team instead.

An athlete at your school with an prosthetic limb wants to compete on the track and field team for the school. The coach tells the athlete that they can't compete as they only registered for meets this year that do not have a para-athlete category.

At Greenfield Middle School, the basketball team is highly competitive, and many students look forward to trying out each year. However, to join the team, students are required to pay a $150 participation fee, which covers uniforms, transportation, and tournament costs. Javier, a passionate and talented player, is eager to try out, but his family is struggling financially after a recent move. When Javier learns about the fee, he knows his family can’t afford it. Hoping for some assistance, he approaches the coach to explain his situation. The coach responds sympathetically but insists that the fee is necessary to cover expenses, suggesting that Javier could either try to raise the money or wait until next year when his situation might improve. Javier feels discouraged, realizing that despite his skills, he may be excluded from the team simply because he can’t afford the fee. This situation highlights classism, where financial barriers prevent capable students from accessing opportunities, leading to inequality within the school.

At HUDDLEUP Middle School, the football team is preparing for the season but still needs a few more players. Eager to join, Emily, a talented athlete with a strong interest in football, decides to attend the next tryout. When Emily arrives, she is ready to prove herself on the field. However, before she even gets a chance to showcase her skills, the coach pulls her aside and says, "Thanks for coming out, but this team is for boys. You should consider playing on the girls’ flag football team instead."
Emily is left feeling disappointed and frustrated. She knows she’s just as capable as the boys, if not more so, yet she’s being turned away solely because of her gender. The suggestion to join the girls’ flag football team feels like an attempt to redirect her ambitions rather than acknowledge her abilities.
