Healthy Relationships

On the field, on the pitch, on the ice, and on the court, relationships matter. For players to have optimal health, and for a team to be successful, a key element is healthy relationships.

Healthy relationships are needed for learning and for life. They help us develop and grow in positive ways.

Mouseover the cards below to see how Healthy relationships help us:

Feel Safe and Secure

Healthy relationships help us feel physically and emotionally safe. They help us feel socially and emotionally connected, and help us to know that, together or apart, those around us will be there for us.

Get our Basic Needs

Healthy relationships help us get things like food, water, shelter, clothing, education and health care. They help us to feel safe and loved.

Feel Valued and that We Belong

Belonging is a human need. We are social beings that need to feel accepted and connected through relationships. We need to feel appreciated and important to those close to us

Feel Supported and Guided

Healthy relationships help us feel that those around us are looking out for us. They create the conditions for us to be our “best selves”, and help us learn and do better, in a safe and caring way.

Protected from Too Much Stress

Stress is a normal part of everyday life. It helps us be alert and motivates us to do things like study for a big test or practice for an upcoming tournament. Too much stress can be unhealthy. Healthy relationships can help us cope with too much stress.

As healthy relationships increase:

⚽ Our mental health improves

⚽ Our overall health improves

⚽ Healthy eating increases

⚽ Fighting decreases

⚽ Reports of quality of life increase

⚽ Likelihood to suffer injuries decreases

⚽ Risk behaviours like smoking and using drugs are reduced

⚽ Victimization decreases

Healthy relationships matter!
