Inclusion 3: Character Strengths

admin

Character Strengths

Character strengths are “the positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel and behave” (VIA Institute on Character).

Can you identify which character strengths are being demonstrated in these scenarios? You can have more than one for each.

For each scenario select the character combinations that are present.

scenario #1

Marsha is at a party with some of her friends from school. While at the party, another student from school named Veda enters.  Her friends begin to make negative comments about her.  Marsha feels uncomfortable about the conversation and what they are saying about the student.  Marsha speaks up and says, “Veda is a student in my class and she always helps other students with their work.  She is a great leader.  Let’s enjoy the evening and keep things positive.”

scenario #2

Gurvir played for his high school soccer team and loved the opportunity.  While the team did not win the championship title, he had a great experience with his teammates who became great friends and even better soccer players. Gurvir was grateful for the opportunity he had to play on the team, and was very appreciative of the time the coach dedicated to practices, games, and their overall development.  Gurvir coordinated a team party and presented the coach with a card signed with messages from all the team players, thanking her for all of her efforts.

She notices that some of the other volunteers start making fun of John for being so quiet. Aisha steps in and says, “Jake is new, so we should make him feel welcome. Everyone has something valuable to contribute, so let’s create an inclusive environment.”

scenario #2

Lucia (she/her) is part of a group project in science class. One of her teammates, Nox (they/them), is struggling to contribute because they recently lost a family member. Some other team members are frustrated with Nox’s lack of participation and begin to criticize them. Lucia feels this is unfair and says, “Nox has always been one of our most dedicated members, and they’re going through a tough time right now. Let's support them and find ways to help them with their part of the project.”

scenario #3

Yahya (he/him) is watching a soccer game with his family when his uncle begins to express prejudiced views about another culture. Yahya feels strongly that this is wrong and calmly says, “Everyone deserves respect, regardless of their background. Our differences make us stronger, and we should celebrate diversity. Let’s focus on what brings us together.”
