Pavlo has recently arrived in Canada from Ukraine and today is his first day of school in the GTA. Pavlo feels nervous as he enters the school. He notices a multilingual welcome sign in the front hallway, and a sign directing him to the office. The foyer is clean and bright, with student artwork lining the walls. He is greeted warmly by the secretary as he enters the office. Pavlo is introduced to his guidance counselor who has arranged for a student, who also speaks Ukrainian, to give him a tour of the school. The student takes Pavlo to class and makes plans to meet up at lunch. In class, Pavlo's seating partner smiles at him and explains what the class is doing. At the end of the day, his guidance counselor checks in to see how his first day of school went. So far, Pavlo is feeling good about his new school.

Julie is new to a hockey team and is one of only two girls. She is greeted by the Coach who introduces her to the rest of the team. She is shown a locker room where she can get ready for practice in the girls' changeroom. As she skates on the ice for the first time, the team does a usual ritual of welcome by tapping their sticks as she skates to warm up.
