Appreciating Diversity
What is Diversity?
A term used to encompass the acceptance and respect of various dimensions including race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religious beliefs, age, physical abilities, political beliefs, or other ideologies. https://crrf-fcrr.ca/glossary-of-terms/
The following actions can show that we acknowledge and appreciate the diversity of others.
Display artwork in the school that recognizes various cultures
Throughout the year, celebrating the achievements and contributions of leaders from minoritized or historically disadvantaged groups (BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, women, etc.)
Being open to new experiences
Discovering and recognizing the talents of others
Listen to the lived experiences of a diverse group of people
Reading a variety of books by authors holding minoritized or historically disadvantaged identities and experiences, e.g., BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, experience of poverty.
Standing up against discrimination, when it is safe to do so
Appreciate the diversity of families and the family unit
Ensuring correct pronunciation of other students’ names and using their correct pronouns.
Trying new activities like sledge hockey or wheelchair basketball
