Action for Change 10: Becoming an Anti-Racist
Understanding Justice
Appreciating diversity is very important but we also need to work to be an anti-racist.
How to be an Anti-Racist: It is important to remember that one conversation, posting on social media and/or identifying yourself as an anti-racist is not enough to take action for social justice. Identifying yourself as an anti-racist is a good start, but more can be done.
An anti-racist is being a teammate that is willing to take a risk, speak up and speak out, when other teammates or classmates are not being treated fairly. When we think about our position, our privilege, and our power, being an anti-racist means that we are willing to disrupt situations that may be seen as socially acceptable to some, but mean that others are excluded or harmed.
Remember: When one athlete is harmed on a team, we all need to recognize the impact. When one member is hurting, it affects us all. When we are working towards being an anti-racist, it is about COLLECTIVE LIBERATION - ensuring that everyone feels freedom, joy, and safety on the team and in the community.
